IZU
RAKAN
Feel The Season
Japan's rural landscapes transform with each passing season—spring awakens with budding flowers, summer hums with the songs of insects, autumn paints the mountains in vivid red and gold, and winter warms the soul with the glow of hearth and fire. This is the cradle of the Japanese spirit.
Feel The Japanese Country Side
In this timeless setting, we celebrate the harmony of cuisine with nature. In a meticulously renovated farmhouse over 200 years old, we host just one group of guests each day. The owner-chef crafts each dish with care, using the finest local ingredients and cooking rice with pure regional water over a wood fire.
Feel The Omotenashi
Izu is a haven of mountain and sea treasures. Our cuisine delights both the palate and the eyes, each dish presented with a special touch that evokes the joy of a first carousel ride. As your time here gently nourishes both heart and soul, you’ll find yourself renewed, as if returning to your childhood home. Season after season, guests return with the familiar words, “I’m home,” embodying the essence of Izu Rakan.

Mistress of the house
Atsuko Kato
Japanese Food Chef
Born in Mishima City, Shizuoka, Japan, my culinary journey is deeply rooted in the teachings of my mother and grandmother. After marrying the potter Chihiro Kato, we established a kiln in a village in Izu, where we embraced the philosophy that "a bowl only becomes complete when it holds food." We began crafting dining experiences centered around this belief.
In 2008, after my husband passed away, I inherited his vision and reopened Rakan on my own. Here, I offer a unique dining experience of "cuisine within time and space," serving just one group per day. Each dish is thoughtfully arranged to capture the beauty and essence of the ever-changing seasons, like painting a picture, with nature as my teacher and inspiration.
My guiding principle is to be unpretentious and genuine. It would bring me great joy if my dear guests could spend their time here at Rakan just as they are, embracing their true selves.
